Discover
In the Discover Phase research is key in order to delve into the problem completely through research. Understanding the context of the problem and conducting exploratory research into the challenge presented are paramount.
User Interview
Once the Creative Brief for the project is received, conducting a stakeholder interview is critical for the website, since it helps to make the right decisions, avoid end moment disappointments, and to implement the changes to create the right product.
- Do you visit the GPI section of the website on a regular basis?
- In your opinion, what is the purpose of GPI?
- Do you think that GPI is being successful in achieving this?
- What do you think works well on the GPI landing page?(desktop or mobile)
- What additional functionality do you believe is required on GPI 2.0?
- Are there any other websites you think would offer inspiration for GPI 2.0?
- How would you define the successful outcome of this UX review of GPI?
Competitors analysis
It helps to solve usability problems, to understand where your product or service stands in the market, to inform the design process, to know the strengths and weaknesses of your competition, to have reliable evidence when making product changes and to focus your efforts in a target market.
Define
The Define Phase aims to turn the research data into a manageable problem, that is, define the challenge into a final problem statement by using our own research. In short, this phase is all about forming a specific problem statement.
Personas
I set up two personas based on the user research. I referred to them through the entire product development process:
Persona A: A visitor is anyone visiting the website and not signed in.
Persona B: Partners are 46 private or government organization experts on peatlands
User journey map
The user journeys of our defined personas are the following:
Develop
The Develop Phase is used to generate potential solutions for the problem defined. This is the phase to generate ideas informed by the first diamond and to design possible solutions in a comprehensive manner.
Information architecture
After blending the information provided by the client with my own research, I devised the following site structure. I have now made it as accessible as possible to all users. Also, as the website contained a vast array of content, I needed very clear information architecture.

Lo-fi Wireframing
Once I organized all my insights, I began to design the website. Firstly, I sketched several of the site’s main screens, using my user flow as a guide. This allowed me to quickly explore several concepts for the website layout. I then tested this with three participants to validate whether these solutions addressed both the user and business needs.
Deliver
Finally, the Deliver Phase is an effort to validate the solutions that work and prepare the design for release into the real world. Non-viable solutions are discarded by means of early prototyping and testing.
Hi-fi prototype
On the basis of all the user research and analysis, I created the final UI design prototype. Below are the initial explorations into how this visual style might look. It is a MVP (Minimum Viable Product). I wanted to emphasize these core values: simplicity, creativity and tradition.
Next step
This case study is the first stage of a larger design process for the development of this website. In fact, the next stages shall include a usability test and a further redefinition/iteration of the same. It shall also include an analysis on how GPI can promote its values and how the partners can get increasingly more involved.
What I’ve learned
- Design user friendly library with labels, tags, filters, categories etc.
- Design unified cards for different functionalities.
- How to design internal portals for signed users and its dashboard.
